You know the tubing crowds thin out by late August. You know the river tables at Gruene River Company get their seats back around Labor Day. What you may not have clocked yet is how much the downtown block between Seguin Avenue and the Comal has changed since spring, and how loaded the next twelve months of openings look for anyone who eats or listens to music within twenty minutes of home.
The story of New Braunfels this summer is not the river. It is the quiet retooling of the town's evening economy. Downtown is picking up a second dining identity, Creekside is queuing up national chains, and the live music slate at Gruene Hall is doing what it always does, just with a different set of names on the marquee than last August. Here is where a resident's Thursday-through-Sunday actually goes this month.
The building at 200 N. Seguin Avenue served as city hall, a police department, and a WWII medic training site before it sat quiet for years. As of February 17, 2026, it serves peppercorn filet and steak frites. Old City Hall Restaurant & Bar opened on Feb. 17 inside the old New Braunfels City Hall building, which first opened 97 years ago. The restaurant is the latest concept from Wiggins Hospitality Group, the team behind McAdoo's Seafood Company and La Cosecha Mexican Table.
That lineage matters. Wiggins has spent more than a decade taking older downtown buildings and turning them into rooms residents actually book for anniversaries and birthdays, not just tourists on a river weekend. Old City Hall extends that pattern with a 200-seat dining room and a bar program built around martinis, negronis, and frozen gin and tonics. The restaurant is open Sunday through Thursday from 4 to 9 p.m. and Friday through Saturday from 4 to 10 p.m.
Two blocks over, the same downtown revitalization thread runs through Muck & Fuss and its neighboring cocktail bar. Owners Terry and Celina Muckenfuss restored the historic Prince Solms Inn and opened the neighboring Sidecar, a speakeasy-style cocktail bar tucked beneath the inn. The original downtown eatery opened in 2019 and has since become a staple for locals and visitors in New Braunfels. If you were tracking Muck & Fuss because friends in San Antonio kept asking about it, that is also happening now: construction has started on a new location at 2422 N. Loop 1604 West on the far north side of San Antonio, with the 8,812-square-foot restaurant expected to be completed by September 15.
The pattern to notice: three of the most talked-about downtown rooms right now are the work of two operator groups, both leaning into historic buildings rather than new construction. That is a very different growth model than what is happening five miles east at Creekside.
If downtown is where the boutique operators are stacking, the Creekside Town Center corridor near I-35 is where the pipeline reads like an airport food court on purpose. This is useful information for anyone deciding whether to keep driving to Alamo Ranch or Selma for a fast-casual weekday dinner.

Meanwhile, a Seguin favorite is bringing a full-menu second location closer to New Braunfels High School. Seguin-based sMAC'n Noodles is opening its second location at 1515 N. Walnut Ave. near New Braunfels High School, and the larger kitchen means house-made pasta, sausage stuffing, and even smoked brisket will be on the menu. A March 2026 opening was projected, so if you have not driven past yet, it is worth a check on your next Walnut Avenue run.
The read for a resident: if you have been sending out-of-town family to San Antonio's Pearl or La Cantera for a "real" dinner, downtown New Braunfels has quietly stopped being the fallback and started being the pitch. If you have been driving to Selma for the chain fix, wait ninety days.
Everyone with a New Braunfels zip code has been to Gruene Hall at least once. The question is which August night is worth the parking. Gruene Hall, built in 1878, is Texas' oldest continually operating and most famous dance hall, and by design not much has physically changed since the Hall was first built — the 6,000 square foot dance hall with a high pitched tin roof still has the original layout with side flaps for open air dancing, a bar in the front, a small lighted stage in the back, and a huge outdoor garden.

If you missed the free Live @ Landa season this year, the 2026 series ran on the third Thursday of the month from March through June and finished with a special Fourth of July concert ahead of the fireworks. The annual Live @ Landa Concert Series returned to the Landa Park Dance Slab this spring and summer, with the free series happening the third Thursday of the month in March, April, May, and June, followed by a special Live @ Landa Finale on the 4th of July in the lead up to the Fourth of July Fireworks Spectacular sponsored by HEB. Put it on your March calendar for next year. It is one of the few things in this town that is genuinely free and genuinely walkable from downtown.
For the interim, the city and Visit New Braunfels calendars are stacked with weeknight food and market programming. August dates include outdoor programming on Aug 3, food and drink evenings on Aug 7, markets and shopping on Aug 7, 8, 15, and 22, additional outdoor events on Aug 10 and 17, and a concerts and live music slot on Aug 21.
Not a bucket list. A plan you could actually run this Saturday.
If you have family visiting in November, the calendar takes care of itself. Wurstfest is a unique annual celebration rich in German culture and full of Texas fun, located near the headwaters of the Comal River in New Braunfels, with good food, music, dancing, exciting carnival rides and games, German, Texan and domestic beer, and Alpine and Bavarian-style entertainment across ten days. Book those out-of-town beds now if you have not.
None of the above is a listing pitch. It is context. The Creekside corridor is being repriced by a different mechanism entirely, one that runs on drive-time to a Chipotle and a CAVA.
